I love coconut, and Koko Brown (5.5% abv) kept looking at me when I walked through the store. I have never been to Hawaii, but the box ensured me that, “this island treasure has a nutty, toffee flavor and aroma that sends you straight to the beaches of Paradise.” Cool. A beer that can make me feel like I’m on a vacation for a fraction of the cost.
It poured a caramel brown, and had virtually no head. It kind of looked like flat coke. A couple of minutes after my pour a head appeared, and there was lingering tracing the whole time I drank this (like two hours, I drank it very slowly because it tasted kind of gross. But I had to finish it, I don’t like to waste beer).
There is a very malty smell with lingering notes of coconut. The coconut smell is natural, it’s not like guzzling Suave shampoo or something.
There’s an aftertaste of fresh coconut shavings, the sip is really sweet initially and there isn’t much of a taste of anything to be honest. Some caramel malt tastes, but it’s pretty weak for a brown ale.
A lot of reviews complained about the carbonation, but mine had barely any. I’m not sure why that is, maybe it’s because I’m a warm beer guzzler. All in all I give this a C-. A bolded C-, because I’m seriously let down. Kona Brewing Co. promised me a trip to the paradise, and all I got was this lousy beer.
