Nepenthe Ales comes to us from the Candia Road Brewing Company in Manchester, New Hampshire. This is the first beer that I’ve had from them, but have noticed their distribution growing strongly in the area, so hopefully soon, I’d like to showcase some more from this new brewery. In the meantime, here’s a short review of their wheat ale.
Whimsical Wheat pours a golden amber with a gigantic beige and bubbly head that will not calm down. Aroma is tons of wheat, some tart notes, fruity esters and sweet malts.
This is not your typical American wheat ale. It’s very sweet and malty, with moderately high levels of sourness. Throw in some bananas/cloves, a low hop bitterness and a subtle spice, and what you get is some sort of hefeweizen hybrid. The body is medium-light, with a dry and lightly tart finish. It’s smooth and creamy with a light alcohol warmth (6.3%). Definitely refreshing and drinkable, but seems a bit confused at times. I would like to revisit this later on during the summer as I learn more about their brewery.
